About World Petroleum Congress:

For the first time in its 72 year history, the World Petroleum Council is holding its tri-annual Congress on the African continent - a fitting tribute at a time when the continent's influence on the world's energy industry has never been greater.

High-level government and industry delegations from the 62 member countries of the World Petroleum Council (WPC), together with many non-member countries, more than 3,500 thousand executives, 250 students and 400 journalists worldwide, are attending this event, which also includes the Southern African International Oil & Gas Exhibition 2005 (SAIOGE 2005).

The 18th World Petroleum Congress (18th WPC) is focused on the theme, "Shaping the Energy Future: Partners in Sustainable Solutions". Energy is the lifeblood of economic and social development and, while oil and gas won't last forever, they will be essential for global developments in the following decades. Transitions must take place towards cleaner forms of energy production and use, and the petroleum industry will be part of this development.
