The African Union’s NEPAD, the United Nations and the African Business Roundtable will join forces once again to review progress towards achieving the Millennium Development Goal in Africa and to share perspectives on successful development models.
The annual Bending the Arc summit will take place at the UN Headquarters on Monday 18th September 2006, and will bring together leaders from government, business and civil society.
Under Secretary General and Head the Special Advisor to the UN Secretary General on Africa, Ambassador Legwaila Joseph Legwaila, is spearheading the UN’s participation in the summit.
The eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) - which range from halving extreme poverty to halting the spread of HIV/AIDS and providing universal primary education, all by the target date of 2015 - form a blueprint agreed to by all the world’s countries and all the world’s leading development institutions.
Prof Firmino Mucavele, Chief Executive of NEPAD has remarked that "$100 bn is needed to be put into the continent to achieve the MDGs. This can only be achieved through partnerships. Bending the Arc provides a forum for building these partnerships. International assistance is important but Africa must lead its own development," adds Mucavele.
Dr Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, Chairman of the African Business Roundtable adds that "the private sector is now the key driver for growth and development across the continent. The MDGs cannot be achieved without our involvement."
This summit follows a successful meeting in 2005 alongside the G8 meeting at which Sir Richard Branson, Paul Wolfowitz, Peter Woicke, Barbara Stocking and Mark Malloch-Brown were among the contributors.
