NEPAD Multi-Stakeholders Dialogue II kicks off
31 Oct 2006

The Second top level Multi-Stakeholders Dialogue of the New Economic Partnership for African Development, NEPAD kicks off tomorrow, in ABUJA, NIGERIA.

A number of stakeholders from the civil society, private sector as well as African Development Partner will take part in the one day dialogue.

The focus of the dialogue which also marks the fifth anniversary of NEPAD is to review debate and explore mechanism for the accelerated implementation of the African plan.

Key challenges facing AFRICA as well as the civil society perspective on NEPAD are among issues to be discussed during the forum.

Others are good governance, resource mobilisation, capacity building for NEPAD Implementation as well as partnerships.

Earlier a statement from NEPAD quoted the organisation's CEO, Professor FIRMINO MUCAVELE as saying that the organ has made a commitment to take ownership of and responsibility for tackling the challenges that face the continent.

Prof. MUCAVELE believes the forum is an opportunity to increase the engagement of various stakeholder groups with NEPAD.

It will provide them with a rich resource of knowledge and capacity on how NEPAD can achieve its strategic aims and objectives.

During the last Multi-Stakeholder Dialogue which was held in SOUTH AFRICA in 2006, lack of human, institutional and financial capacity was cited as a major impediment to the implementation of NEPAD activities.

NEPAD was founded by leaders of Algeria, Egypt, Nigeria, Senegal and South Africa from a document which was formally adopted at the 37th Summit of the organisation of African Unity, AU in July 2001.

In another development, the fifth summit of the Heads of State and Government Implementation Committee, HSGIC, has been postponed. The two day summit was to take place from Monday 30th in Abuja.

The meeting which was to be preceded by the Multi-Stakeholder Dialogue will now be held in January.

No official reason has been given for the postponement, but the CINO-African summit due to take place in Beijing CHINA next week is being cited as the reason.
