African Countries Urged to Accede to the APRM
02 Nov 2006

African countries have been asked to increase participation in the African Peer Review Mechanism APRM.

Ambassador Isaac Aluko-Olokun, who is in charge of APRM in Nigeria, said an increase in participation by the countries will serve to show the success of the peer review process.

Participants from the various countries attending the APRM inter-country exchange of experience seminar urged African countries to generate funds to run the programmes of the APRM. They expressed fear that if the tempo of the process is not maintained, it could lead to apathy and unsustainability.

The participants noted that Africans in the Diaspora could be encouraged to help fund the national programme of action in order to encourage ownership of the process instead of depending on external funding. They said over-dependence on donor support could compromise the effort.

The participants also noted that many African countries can afford to fund the programme if they avoid corruption and streamline the use of the funds.

Resource mobilization, they said is an important aspect of attracting funding to run the programmes.

The Ghanian delegation called for prudence in the management of funds in order to ensure money is spent on the programmes that are set out.

Aluko-Olokun further noted the need to demystify the whole issue of the African Peer Review Mechanism in order to make it more understood by the people on the continent. "

Once APRM is understood it will be easier to mobilize funding to run the programmes," he said.
